round up, round up, round up

Another day and another birthday in the Pálsson troop 🙂

Today my third eldest brother, Hafþór Ingi turns the big 38! Out of my half-siblings, Hafþór is the only one I actually grew up around, as he moved to Australia with my parents in 1980 and moved back to Iceland in 1993 so for the first eight years of my life he was a big part of it.

This photo is of me when I was a wee little Snuffleupagus of just 4 weeks been held by the aforementioned brother who in this photo is 17! Don’t you just love the flags of the world outfit? Perhaps I was destined to be doing International Studies?

But this isn’t my birthday so bringing the attention back to the birthday boy. I don’t really have any funny moments but I am sure he does of me. There are some things that I do know, this man is a musical genius in all aspects from singing, to playing to writing, he is a wonderful father with two gorgeous kids, an incredible wealth of knowledge and an all round super cool person and big brother 🙂 Here is a more recent photo – taken last July at the family moot in Iceland, in his entire element with his guitar and perhaps it is the ever adoring younger sister in me, but I reckon he looks like Chris Martin of Coldplay and has a better voice too 🙂

Ok, that was a little longer than I planned on it been so back to the topic as the title of this post suggested – round up.

The Commonwealth Games are on at the moment and Australia of course is on fire! I always enjoy the Commonwealth Games more than the Olympics; they just seem a whole lot more friendlier, because they are the “Friendly Games” 🙂 It’s just great to see things like this, and many other countries getting their first Gold, Silver or Bronze medals, just great stuff! and Ben Lee is going to be playing at the closing ceremony, top stuff!

But to put some family spin on the Commonwealth Games, big kudos to my second cousin Nathan Eglington who is on fire in the Kookaburras (Australian Men’s Hockey team) with a hat-trick in a 5-1 win against England. Should be another Gold Medal for Australia there.

Uni is still uni, but I have now done my first piece of assessment so it really feels like the semester is underway now – it is week 4 of 13 after all.

Go check out some of the designs Tracy is pumping out at the moment, that girl is on fire I tell you.

Big Cheers for EK Success and Jacob getting engaged – so happy 🙂

The Parcel man brought me five (5) new crafty books from Amazon.co.jp the other day – will post more about them soon 🙂

I made the most yummy blueberry muffins last night – total heaven. I used this recipe – Blueberry Muffins from Elsie.com all I changed was that I used buttermilk instead of plain yoghurt and didn’t add the lemon zest because I had no lemons and WHOA total heaven, very, very nice muffins!

I think that was all I wanted to round up for the moment but I leave you with this note, something “big” and “special” is coming a few days time 😀

Jökull

Remember the quilt I made for one of my nephews? Well it arrived in Iceland the other day and my sister sent me a photo of Jökull with his quilt 🙂 Glacier boy now has his magic powers 🙂

one album

The first in a series of music related posts.

If the music police came to your house and told you that for the rest of your life, you could only listen to one album for the rest of time, what would you choose? My choice always surprises me. I don’t think I could pick a single artist so it has to be a compilation or a soundtrack and I have so many to pick from but the winner?

Icelandic Pop Favourites – you can listen to previews from this link.

Toti, Anna and the kids sent this home with Pabbi after his 2000 trip to Iceland if I recall correctly, Matthew was sent one of the companion CD’s – Icelandic Rock Favourites. Without a doubt, this CD is the one that I have played the most, it was one for the first I ripped to MP3 format and again one of the first to be uploaded to my MP3 player.

The thing is though, I remember opening up the wrapping paper, seeing the CD and thought uggh Pop, why couldn’t I have got rock or something like Matthew, how wrong was I. Icelandic pop and music in general is so different to anything else I have heard. I am not a big pop fan but nothing could replace this CD in my collection.

I see the CD as having two styles in it, the first the tracks with a dance anthem theme; repetitive lyrics, lots of beats, the second style are the tracks with a focus on the vocals, less beats more guitar and piano but still very upbeat, these are songs that you can clean to. Some songs are in English, some are in Icelandic, sure I only understand some words in the Icelandic songs but I still love them.

Track Listing

My favourite track on the CD is without a doubt Stuðmenn’s Komdu með, I can’t really tell you why, other than the fact that each time I find myself singing away. My name on MSN and ICQ many, many times in my younger days was Komdu með or Helen – Komdu með.

So thanks to Toti and family for putting an irreplaceable album in my collection and opening my ears to a whole new world of music.

You can buy single songs from Tonlist for USD$0.99, bargain! Go explore Icelandic music 🙂 and if you could only have one album from your collection, what would it be?

Ireland

sent us an email today, telling us that the company he works for (Industria) asked him if he wanted to go work work in the Dublin, Ireland office for a month and who could turn down an offer like that?

So, my lovely big brother got to use his new and shiney Icelandic passport to breeze through passport control, unlike the excessive time we spent waiting to be processed and we were on Australian passports and are part of the Commonwealth Realm, really is something, we recognise Lizzie II as our head of state and we have to wait in line and get questioned whilst all the Europeans just waltz on through. Just unsportsman like 🙁

Back on track though, so whilst my Karl is living it up in Ireland, back here in Australia, we are hoping for rain, running out of water, doing assignments, working, chatting about our plans to to drag queen jelly wrestling tomorrow after uni (now that could be interesting) and not much else.

Helen at Santa CruzHelen and Matthew on 'holidays'Want to share these two images that Karl has taken on the two times I have visitited him overseas, the first at Santa Cruz in November 2002 and the second Matthew and I doing our thing in Iceland this year.

Pabbi.

ETA, well he just went to the doctor here and has an order for blood tests in two weeks once his body has settled down from the trip. Our doctor is certain it is all just a result of dehydration, so that is good to hear.

There is something wrong with my dad, what we don’t know for sure yet his blood sugar levels have been very high – round the 14 mmol/L in London, will get tested again in two weeks.

Yesterday evening I received this email from Mum.

Dear Helen,

Please try to make an appointment with Howard Ryan for Pabbi on Friday morning – just get into my diary and see it doesn’t clash with my dentist appointment.

Pabbi is ok now but he spent 8 hours in hospital yesterday – we got on the plane by the skin of our teeth. He has had trouble with high blood sugar and dehydration. I am very glad yesterday is over. He has slept a fair bit of the flight from London. He managed to crack a rib in all this.

See you sometime Thurs,

Love Mum

As I have a uni class on Thursday mornings, they were going to get a taxi from the airport home, however after reading this email I decided it would be best for me to pick them up. I actually ran into a girl from school who was picking up Steve Towson who was on the same flight my parents were on.

After a while waiting my parents came through the gate, Mum pushing the trolley and Pabbi walking slowly behind her. Straight away I asked what the hell had happened, Mum simply broke down in tears and gave me a hug and said that she would tell me everything when we got home.

Pabbi arrived in London on Monday evening and checked into the youth hostel they were staying at, Mum was out seeing Mary Poppins with her sisters and niece. This hostel still had single sex dorms, so mum did not see Pabbi when she got home from the musical. In the morning one of the ladies in her dorm, asked her if she was Ruth Palsson, there was a message at reception for her, when she got there she was told she had to go see her husband as he was unwell. Mum says this was an understatement, he had cuts and dried blood over his chest and head.

It seems that somewhere round 3 that morning, he had gone to the toilet and collapsed, managing to make a mess of himself in the process. He was unable to stand up and been the man he is, he didn’t try calling for help and somehow managed to get back to his dorm, where instead of waking one of the men up in his dorm for help. He got into bed and waited till one of them woke up to ask for help. This meant that he didn’t receive treatment for about 3hrs later when Mum found out round 8am.

Shortly after that, an Ambulance took him to the same hospital where Cherie Blair had her latest baby, where he underwent numerous tests and was placed in the observation ward. His blood sugar level at this time was 14mmol/L – very high. After those results came back they did an arterial blood test to check something with his severe dehydration (partially his own fault due to his ways of needing to be at places as soon as possible and not asking people for help)

They put him on a drip to receive 1L of liquids over 4hrs to help his body out, at the end of this he had another blood test to see if his condition had improved – it had slightly (his blood sugar level was down to 8mmol/L). During this time Mum had rang the airline to see when other possible flights were, the next available flight wouldn’t be till Friday night which would mean another 3 days in London) knowing this the doctor allowed him to get on the flight home.

Of course Pabbi is Pabbi so during this time he was stressing something chronic about making the flight etc etc.

Now he is tucked up in bed, waiting till the appointment with our family doc in 3hrs.

Singapore, again.

Well we now back in Singapore waiting for the final leg of the journey to start in a couple of hours time, yet again chilling at the free internet.

I love getting stamps in my passport so I went through imigration here, got the stamp, walked outside and then back in and through immigration again 🙂 out of it I got two stamps in my passport, an experience of the really humid air in Singapore and that is about it 🙂

Got some final duty free shopping to do and then up to the rooftop gardens to get a Singapore Sling.

London was a mess, no one knew what was happenning, it took us 3hrs to get from Victoria Station to Heathrow, at each station we were told different things by different people, get told to go to this station and then that station would know nothing – it was a total mess!

I was on Tottenham Court Road when the explosions went off, I was inside a shop talking to an Australian working there, and then the sirens started, police car after police car raced down the road. After completing my transaction, I walked back to goodge street station only to be told at the door that this station had no incoming trains and we were to walk down the road to Tottenham Court Station, we were told that an inciddent had occurred at Oval and Warren St station, this later became a passenger incident.

After going on some very very packed tubes I managed to arrive at Victoria where I was meeting Matthew (he left Iceland a day after me). At Victoria the ATM’s and EFTPOS machines were down – I have not found out why. Cops where everywhere as were people with luggage trying to get to the airport.

When Matthew arrived, we decided not to do what we had planned for the afternoon since only two tube lines were operating completly, others partially or fully closed and just go straight to the airport.

After gosh knows how many different directions and changing tubes/trains/buses, we finally got to Heathrow. We were incredibley lucky that the check-in line for Singapore airlines was non-existent, went through with ease and went to have dinner in the pub.

Almost home and I have suprises to share when I get there :):)
